Railway Museum
Visitors to the Elgin County Railway Museum have the opportunity to see first hand the inner workings of a real locomotive shop! The sounds of on-going work echo through the structure as various restoration projects are undertaken.
The Elgin County Railway Museum was incorporated in 1988 as a registered non-profit charity for the purpose of preserving and restoring railway heritage in St. Thomas. The Museum is housed in the 1913 former Michigan Central Railroad Locomotive Repair Shops next to the Canada Southern Railway Station. Stop by to view an impressive collection of artifacts that include several locomotives, cabooses, passenger and baggage cars, Jiggers, Hand Cars, signals, signage and lanterns. The extensive archive can be toured if pre-booked, or visit during one of the museum’s various events throughout the year including Railway Nostalgia Weekend in June, Day Out With Thomas weekends (pre-booking required) in July and Heritage Day in Aug.
